The best story I read in my latest update to my stories read table is “Better the Devil You Know…” by Allen M. Steele. It takes place on board the ship the SS Morro Castle just before tragedy struck on September 8, 1934. It is a tale of time travelers from the twenty-fourth century doing whatever they can to preserve the past. In this case it means ensuring that the disaster happens. This story is a true thriller with a bittersweet ending. Unfortunately, in order to read it you will need to purchase a copy of the July/August 2026 issue of Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine. And they don’t publish online, only in print or ebook.
